About the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES)

 2019-01-03

The Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) is a professional membership organization dedicated to improving the lives of people who have, are at risk for or are affected by diabetes. Its members represent more than 14,000 diabetes educators who offer person-centered, holistic care that improve health and quality of life. ADCES champions the use of diabetes self-management education and supports through innovative continuing education, technology, advocacy and science-based research.

ADCES provides a myriad of resources for people living with diabetes. Visitors to DiabetesEducator.org can find information (in English and Spanish) on healthy eating, exercise, monitoring blood sugar, as well as other topics like reducing risks of diabetes complications, prescription savings resources, mental health and peer support. AADE also helps connect people with diabetes to a diabetes education program in their area.

ADCES has been a longtime leader in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes risk reduction through advocacy, lifestyle coach training, education and program support. They have engaged with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in several funding opportunities to expand the National Diabetes Prevention Program and support traditionally underserved, at-risk populations.

ADCES also engages in legislation and policy to ensure the interests of the diabetes community are best served. In 2017, the organization issued a position on healthcare reform, stating any reform efforts must preserve coverage of pre-existing conditions, maintain coverage for dependents under the age of 26, prioritize prevention and prohibit medical discrimination through coverage decisions and determination of reimbursement rates. This includes designing benefits in ways that discriminate against people due to their age, life expectancy, or any other health or related factors.

To continue to influence professional growth for members of their organization, ADCES launched Diabetes Advanced Network Access (Danatech), a comprehensive technology website for diabetes educators and other health practitioners to keep up with the latest technological advances in diabetes care and education. Currently, an exclusive benefit for ADCES members, Danatech allows healthcare professionals to participate in innovation-shaping research and focus on continuing education. Danatech is considered an extension of the organization’s leadership in diabetes education and shows their dedication to training and resources to ensure the highest quality of care possible.
